The city of Gjirokastra is part of the UNESCO world heritage List and its one of the most attractive touristic sites in Albania. The main characteristic of Gjirokastra is the intensive use of stone in building the houses, which look like small fortresses, the streets of cobblestone, which all lead to Bazaar. You can also visit the Mosque of Bazaar here, built in 1557. Due to all these features, Gjirokastra is also known as the “The Stone City”.
The most important structure of the city is the castle, which is the biggest castle in Albania. Inside the castle, you can visit the Museum of Weapons,opened in 1971. Weapons from the prehistoric times up to the World War II are exhibited on here.
During your stay in Gjirokastra, you can visit the Ethnographic Museum, located in the house where the former communist dictator Enver Hoxha was born. You can also visit the house of Skendulaj, in a dominating position, which has undergone restoration. It is one of the most magnificent and characteristic buildings of Gjirokastra. A special feature of the house is the wooden carved ceilings and the characteristic guest room. From the wooden balcony in the third floor, you can enjoy an impressive view of Gjirokastra.
In Gjirokastra you can visit interesting sites, part of the cultural heritage as well as natural wonders.

Depart from Tirana at 8:00 am and we will be driving to Gjirokastra for around 3.5 hours.Stop for a coffee break on our way in Vjosa river.The only wild river in Europe,and if the weather is favorable we can swim in the crystal clear waters of Vjosa.After we have our time in the river,wee will head to Gjirokastra to accommodate in a traditional family runned guesthouse.
Afterwards we will start to explore Gjirokastra city and visit its main attraction sites.We will visit Skendulaj house,built in 1700 and with its massive size where 25-30 people of the same family used to live together.We will learn about the history of the house and to admire the amazing architecture used.
After we are done with Skendulaj house,we will head to Ethnographic Musem,whee we will learn all abut the rich traditions and costums of Gjiokatra in the house-museum,once the house where the communist leader Enver Hoxha was born.In the afternoon you will have free time to explore the old city bazaar and try local products until we return to the guesthouse.
On the seconf day,after we will have a traditional breakfast,we will start to hike to Gjirokastra’s Castle.
The biggest and one of the most important castles in Albania, inside the castle, we will visit the Museum of Weapons,opened in 1971. Weapons from the prehistoric times up to the World War II are exhibited on here.After we have visited the castle,we will start heading towards Tirana and give an end to our amazing tour!
